The British Aircraft Corporation One-Eleven,  also known as the BAC 1-11, is a British short-range jet airliner that  served Dan Air from 1969 until the takeover in 1992. The 1-11 was  designed to replace the propellor powered Vickers Viscount. It was the  second short-haul jet airliner to enter airline service. Due to its  later service entry, the One-Eleven took advantage of more efficient  engines and airline experience of jets already in service. This made it  popular, with over half of the sales at it's launch being in the largest  and most lucrative market, the United States. The One-Eleven was one of  the most successful British airliner designs. Dan Air used the  200,300,400 and 500 series with several minor variants such as the 475.  The pictures on this page will show, where possible, each aircraft in  every livery it wore. the Airline used the type on Scheduled and charter  operations. They were widely admired for their attractive look and they  were popular with  passengers and crew.

In 1967 a larger  119-seat version was introduced as the One-Eleven 500 (also known as  Super 1-11). This gave US aircraft, the DC-9 & Boeing 737, the  chance to make up for the 1-11's early penetration of their domestic  market. The British aircraft's initial one-year advantage now turned  into a one-year delay and the 500 failed to sell in the USA. Compared  with earlier versions. The 1-11 500 was longer by 8ft 4in ahead of the  wing and 5ft 2in behind it. The wing span was increased by 5 ft , and  the latest Mk. 512 version of the Spey was used. The new version sold  reasonably well across the world, particularly to European charter  airlines. Having faced competition  with the  US aircraft by 1966, by  1970 the 1-11 also faced more competition, this time from Europe. The  new competitor was the Fokker F28. Available as a four-member family, it  was lighter, less complex, and cheaper. The One-Eleven 475 of 1970 was  launched to compete with the F.28. It combined the 400 fuselage with the  higher power and larger wing of the 500 and was intended for hot and  high operations. Only ten of the One-Eleven Mk 475 were sold. In 1977,  the One-Eleven 670, a quiet and updated 475, was offered to the Japanese  domestic market, failing to sell. Total deliveries for 1966 stood at 46  aircraft, and another 120 were delivered by 1971. At this point orders  slowed to a trickle. British production continued until 1982. There were  two reasons why the production line was kept open for just 35 aircraft  delivered over 11 years: first, BAC hoped that Rolls-Royce would develop  a quieter and more powerful version of the Spey engine, making possible  further One-Eleven developments; second, throughout the early part of  the period Romania was negotiating to buy the entire One-Eleven  programme and transfer production of the type to Bucharest. This later  happened and although the project was ambitious it never gained momentum  with just 22 being produced. Further plans for newer models too failed  to materialise when Hawker Siddeley and BAC merged to form British  Aerospace. At one time the UK's largest charter airline was considering  the 1-11, but instead, opted at the last minute, to chose the Boeing  737. When Dan Air was taken over in 1992 it's fleet of 1-11 were  considered obsolete for the new owenr's requirements. The entire fleet  was transferred to Bournemouth and put up for sale. British Air Ferries  bought the biggest part of them. The airline was renamed British World  Airlines in 1993. The 1-11 fleet stayed with the company until it's  bankruptcy in 2001. The now ageing fleet was then sold on with European  Aviation buying most of the ramaining aircraft. With reference to G-AZED. Bavaria registration was D-ANDY. It last flew on the initial Dan-Air use on 28Oct86.
On its second Dan-Air use, its CofA was re-issued on 14Apr87 and it ferried from Manchester to Gatwick on 16Apr87 before re-entering service.
The lease was completed on 31Oct87 and it was ferried from Manchester to Norwich for painting all white. Became N174FE and later EI-BWT with Florida Express.

This aircraft was completely rebuilt on the Hurn production line as shown in photograph 1 after a runway overrun after an aborted take-off at Gerona-Spain on 19Jul70. The damaged aircraft was dismantled and ferried to Hurn on 01Oct70 in the one and only CL-44O.
